The Tasting Panel’s September/October 2025 issue features a thoughtful feature of Golden Eagle Vodka titled “A New Definition.” The article traces founder Dakota Blaze Rader’s path from his early days in hospitality to the graduate school thesis that ultimately became the brand. His goal was clear: bring authentic character to a category long seen as “neutral.”
Rader began with a question. What if vodka could be expressive instead of anonymous? The timing was perfect. The TTB had recently updated vodka’s definition, removing the old requirement that vodka have “no distinctive character.” This opened the door for innovation, and Golden Eagle Vodka was born.
The article highlights the use of high-protein wheat from a family farm in Montana. This special variety thrives in the Big Sky region at around 7,500 feet, where short 90-day growing seasons, dramatic temperature swings, and deep roots create strong, resilient grain with unique flavor.
That character is preserved through a single-distillation method, a fine-tuned five-phase mash, and slow fermentation, giving bartenders a spirit that works beautifully in both simple pours and complex cocktails. (read more about our process)
Rader describes the flavor honestly: “This doesn’t smell like vodka.” On the nose, it is naturally sweet and nutty. On the palate, it is creamy, with a long, distinctive wheat finish. Golden Eagle can act like a gin in its ability to elevate classic cocktails such as Martinis. At the same time, it was created to be equally rewarding neat or on the rocks.
What The Tasting Panel found
The Tasting Panel tasting notes describe Golden Eagle as rich and full-bodied, with flavors of toasted wheat, dried pineapple, and coconut. In cocktails, they picked up hints of watermelon, fennel, and red fruit, praising its creamy, buttery mouthfeel. The overall impression was clean and smooth, with a touch of sweetness and a subtle savory edge.
